Monthly Meeting– November 5, 2014

 

  1. Welcome – Danny Bouska opened the meeting at 7:22 PM with a welcome to guests and members.  Approximately 35 people were in attendance.
  1. Recognition of Guests – Danny Barentine indicated that there was one guest in attendance, John Turgen.
  1. Newsletter Questions – Kevin Schuck asked 5 questions with answers contained within the November Newsletter.  A 50/50 raffle ticket was awarded to the first person with the correct answer to each question.
  1. No one won the Newsletter secret phrase of “Those who cannot change their mind cannot change anything.” by George Bernard Shaw.
  1. Ballots were passed out to members for voting.  While results were being tabulated, the group tested their scuba knowledge on a diverse set of questions.
  1. The following individuals were elected to the 2015 Board of Directors:
    1. President – Danny Bouska
    2. Vice President – Steve Ogdent
    3. Treasurer – Kevin Schuck
    4. Secretary – Allen Bothwell
    5. Jr. Board Member – Bill Parker
    6. Steve Ogden volunteered to serve as Activities Coordinator since no one had been nominated.  All in attendance accepted Steve in this position.

  1. Board Member Reports
    1. Sandra Playle, Secretary:  Reading of the Minutes – Kelly Barentine moved that the minutes be accepted as presented, seconded by Milli Pope.  Motion carried.
    2. Danny Barentine, Vice President: Membership Report – we current have 99 new members.
    3. Kevin Schuck, Treasurer:
  1. i.      Financial Status – Kevin made a deposit of $1,620.50, which includes $352.50 in dues (1 new member, 20 members renewed for 2015), $46 in 50/50 sales, $5 in non-wear fines, $101 in merchandise sales, and $1,116 in silent auction proceeds.  The new balance is $5,085.65.
  1. ii.      Kevin noted that $36.72 is still outstanding from the May Balmorhea outing.
  1. iii.      Kevin indicated that a total of 34 people have renewed for 2015 using the Early Bird rates.
  1. iv.      Kevin indicated that he is currently selling tickets for the 2014 Christmas Party.
    1. Social Committee – Kelly Barentine indicated that the November Restaurant of the Month will be at Everything German in Hurst on November 7 at 7:00 p.m.
    1. Activities:
  1. i.      October 25-26 – Underwater Pumpkin Carving at Blue Lagoon – Danny Bouska indicated that 28 people attended, and everyone had a great time.  The weather was very good, the water was warm and very clear.  A scary movie was shown that evening “The Creature from the Black Lagoon”
  1. ii.      November 8 – Chili Cookoff – Travis Wells and Lisa Craft will be coordinating.  Travis has reserved the pavilion at the J1 site.  Electricity is provided, and everyone is encouraged to decorate their areas.
  1. iii.      December 13 – Christmas Party – Scott Playle talked briefly about the activities and encouraged people to purchase their tickets.  This will include food provided by the board (turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, green beans), and members are encouraged to bring a side dish or dessert.  A gift exchange will be held, along with a dessert contest.  Valuable items will be raffled off at the party.
  1. iv.      January 24-25 – San Marcos River Cleanup – this is being coordinated by Steve Ogden
  1. v.      February 21-22 – Texas Dive Show
  1. vi.      February 28 – March 1 – Arctic Dive at Lake Murray – this is being coordinated by Steve Ogden.
  1. vii.      March 28 – Spring Lake Diver Authorization Course
  1. viii.      April 17-19 – Tyler State Park – 3 campsites have been reserved.
    1. Becky Marak, Senior Board Member (absent):  Kevin indicated that Becky had sold $101 in merchandise last month.
    2. Mark Stonebridge, Junior Board Member:  Mark indicated he had collected $46 last month for our 50/50 Raffle, along with $5 in Rebel non-wear fines.

    1. Johnny Griffin requested that the board consider purchasing/obtaining a projector to be used for movies at all outings.
    2. Brian Neal indicated that Julia at Glass Aquatics has a license for fish collection, and needs divers to capture fish for sale.

Monthly Meeting– October 1, 2014

 

  1. Welcome – Danny Bouska opened the meeting at 7:35 PM with a welcome to guests and members.  Approximately 35 people were in attendance.
  1. Recognition of Guests – Danny Bouska indicated that there was one guest in attendance, but that he had just joined the club, so was now a member.
  1. Newsletter Questions – Kevin Schuck asked 5 questions with answers contained within the October Newsletter.  A 50/50 raffle ticket was awarded to the first person with the correct answer to each question.
  1. Steve Ogden won the Newsletter secret phrase with his entry of “The committee is the group that keeps minutes and loses hours.” By Milton Berle.
  1. Jim and Rita Simpson won the special raffle prize of $75 for donating items to the silent auction.

    1. Sandra Playle, Secretary:  Reading of the Minutes – Steve Ogden moved that the minutes be accepted as presented, seconded by Jay Delmar.  Motion carried.
    2. Danny Barentine, Vice President: Membership Report (absent) - Danny Bouska reported that we currently have 99 members.  Kent Johnson is our newest member.
    3. Kevin Schuck, Treasurer:
  1. i.     Financial Status – Kevin made a deposit of $1,254.29, which includes $27.50 in dues (1 new member), $55 in 50/50 sales, $4 in non-wear fines, $50 in merchandise sales, $81 in scuba bingo proceeds, $261.79 in reimbursement for the July Tubing outing, and $775 in reimbursement for the Labor Day Rig Dive outing.  The new balance is $3,833.75.
  1. ii.     Kevin noted that $36.72 is still outstanding from the May Balmorhea outing.
    1. Social Committee (absent) – Danny Bouska reminded folks about the last social outing of the year, which will be held October 11 in Grapevine.  He asked people to mention that they are with the Diving Rebels when purchasing tickets.

    3. Secretary – Allen Bothwell and Jessica Rogers were nominated.

    7. Steve Ogden made a motion to close the nominations, seconded by Scott Playle.  Motion carried.
  1. Crazy Scuba Videos were watched while people participated in the silent auction.

    1. Activities:
  1. i.     August 30-Sept 1 (Labor Day) – Mammoth Lake and Gulf Oil Rig Dive – Scott Playle indicated that it was the worst ocean dive he has ever done.
  1. ii.     September 27-28 – Athens Scuba Park – Mark Stonebridge indicated it was a very fun trip with approximately 15 people attending.
  1. iii.     October 4-11 – Curacao – Danny Bouska indicated that16 people are attending.
  1. iv.     October 18 – Swap Meet – Danny Bouska indicated that this will be held at Humperdinks on the back patio from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.  Members are encouraged to bring their own tables.
  1. v.     October 25-26 – Underwater Pumpkin Carving at Blue Lagoon – Danny Bouska will be coordinating.
  1. vi.     November 8 – Chili Cookoff – Travis Wells and Lisa Craft will be coordinating.  Travis indicated that they would like to reserve the pavilion instead of the traditional 3 campsites in the past.  This costs only $25 more, and will provide plenty of parking, tables and restrooms.  Travis made a motion that the budget for this outing be increased by $50, and that the club include two t-shirts and a hat for prizes.  Sandra seconded the motion, and the motion carried.
  1. vii.     December 13 – Christmas Party – Scott Playle indicated that more information will be coming soon.
    1. Becky Marak, Senior Board Member:  Becky announced that she sold $50 in merchandise last month, and that all custom orders are due before the end of this meeting.
    2. Mark Stonebridge, Junior Board Member:  Mark indicated he had collected $55 last month for our 50/50 Raffle, along with $4 in Rebel non-wear fines.

  1. New Business:
    1. Steve Ogden reported that several members participated in the Hells Gate cleanup at Possum Kingdom Lake a few weeks ago.  With everyone participating, they filled a Brazos River Barge with trash.  Steve indicated that he will try to publicize this event more in 2015.
    2. Steve Ogden indicated that he has State Fair Tickets, and to please see him if folks are interested.
  1. The winners of the silent auction prizes were announced.  The auction made $1,116, which is more than the $930 budgeted.

Monthly Meeting– August 6, 2014

 

  1. Welcome – Danny Bouska opened the meeting at 7:17 PM with a welcome to guests and members.  Approximately 45 people were in attendance.
  1. Recognition of Guests – Danny Barentine recognized twelve guests:  Edie and Greg Biggs, Kim Norris, Mark Smith, Kidd and Cindy Simms, Roger and Terrie Lee, and Jarret Voorhies along with his parents and his grandmother.
  1. Newsletter Questions – Danny Bouska asked 5 questions with answers contained within the August Newsletter.  A 50/50 raffle ticket was awarded to the first person with the correct answer to each question.

    2. Danny Barentine, Vice President: Membership Report - Danny Barentine reported that we currently have 95 members.
    3. Kevin Schuck, Treasurer (absent):
  1. i.     Financial Status – Kevin made a deposit of $416.50, which includes $87.50 in dues (3 new divers and 1 non-diver), $38 in 50/50 sales, $1 in non-wear fines, $44 in merchandise sales, and $246 in raffle sales for the Mid-Year outing.  The new balance is $3,622.37.
  1. ii.     Also noted that there is $36.72 outstanding from the Balmorhea Outing Share that needs to be collected.

  1. i.     Kelly Barentine reported that 16 people attended the July Restaurant of the Month at BFF in Mansfield.  The food and the service were both very good.
  1. ii.     Kelly Barentine indicated that the August Restaurant of the Month would be at Amberjax in Dallas on Friday, August 8 at 7:00 p.m.
  1. iii.     The third social outing is coming up in the next several months.
  1. Jarret Voorhies did an excellent presentation on Shark Finning and Project Aware Finathon
  1. Mark Stonebridge did a last call for 50/50 raffle tickets.

  1. i.     August 16-17 – Lake Murray, OK – Scott Playle indicated that approximately 20 people have signed up.  Scott and Sandra are doing the Saturday evening meal, and Scott asked for a volunteer to coordinate Saturday lunch.
  1. ii.     August 30-Sept 1 (Labor Day) – Mammoth Lake and Gulf Oil Rig Dive – Scott Playle indicated that he needs a non-refundable deposit of $150/person if anyone is interested in diving on the boat.  There is one spot left.  Approximately 18 people are signed up to dive Mammoth Lake.
  1. iii.     September 27-28 – Athens Scuba Park – Mark Stonebridge is coordinating this outing.
  1. iv.     October 4-11 – Curacao – Approximately 13-17 people have signed up or expressed interest in attending.
  1. v.     Danny Bouska reported on the Utila trip from July. 19 people attended, and everyone had a very good time.  The wind was very strong, so there was limited diving on one side of the island.  The food was also very good.
    1. Becky Marak, Senior Board Member:  Becky announced that she sold $44 in merchandise last month.

  1. i.     Mark indicated he had collected $38 last month for our 50/50 Raffle, along with $1 in Rebel non-wear fines.

    1. Steve Ogden noted that Spring Lake is starting up their Scientific Diver certification program again in the next several months, and that more information will be coming soon.
    2. Sherry Strahla and Bill are getting married this month in Chicago, Illinois.  Congratulations!
    3. The Swap Meet is scheduled for October 18, but the location needs to be confirmed.
    4. Danny Bouska asked for input/suggestions on the fall fundraiser.  Unfavorable feedback had been received from the membership earlier in the year via the survey regarding the Chinese Auction, so the board was proposing to do a Silent Auction with Scuba Bingo instead.  Several members expressed that doing Scuba Bingo with the Silent Auction would be too chaotic, but that they would like to try something new besides the Chinese Auction.  Suggestions were made to do Scuba Bingo in September, and the Silent Auction in October.

    1. Sandra Playle, Secretary (absent):  Reading of the Minutes – Kelly Barentine moved that the minutes be accepted as presented, seconded by Becky Marak.  Motion carried.
    2. Danny Barentine, Vice President: Membership Report - Danny Barentine reported that we currently have 98 members.  Mark Smith is our newest member.
    3. Kevin Schuck, Treasurer:
  1. i.     Financial Status – Kevin made a deposit of $838.50, which includes $155 in dues, $45.50 in 50/50 sales, $2 in non-wear fines, $110 in merchandise sales, $2 in miscellaneous income, $24 in outing share, and $500 in deposits for the Curacao outing.  The new balance is $3,684.20.
  1. ii.     Budget Amendment – Kevin reported that due to the reservation/cancellation policy for the cabins at the July Tubing outing, the club could not receive a refund for any of the monies spent on the two cabins, totaling $1,222.20.  Since only 7 members attended this outing, when traditionally all 20 spots in the cabins were taken, the board is proposing that the $200 of outing funds be put toward the second cabin, and that a budget amendment of $411.60 be made to cover the remaining cost of the second cabin.  The cost of the first cabin would be split among the 7 attendees.  Kevin Schuck made a motion that a budget amendment of $411.60 be made to cover the remaining cost of the first cabin, seconded by Kelly Barentine.  Discussion was held regarding why this issue occurred.  The motion on the budget amendment passed.
  1. iii.     Danny Bouska made a motion that $200 allocated toward the Swap Meet be reallocated to the July Tubing Outing to reduce the cost for the 7 participants from $87.30 to $58.73.  Steve Ogden seconded this motion.  The motion to reallocate the budget passed.

  1. ii.     Kelly Barentine indicated that the September Restaurant of the Month would be on Friday, September 5 at 7:00 p.m.

    1. Sharon Harris won the first game for $15.
    2. Lisa Craft won the second game for $20.
    3. Kelly Barentine won the third game for $30.

  1. i.     August 16-17 – Lake Murray, OK – This was a good outing with good food, even though the visibility was poor.
  1. ii.     August 30-Sept 1 (Labor Day) – Mammoth Lake and Gulf Oil Rig Dive – The visibility was very poor at both Mammoth Lake and on the Rig Dive.  There were 4’ – 5’ swells on the rig dive, and definitely would not recommend the Dive Charter.
  1. iii.     September 27-28 – Athens Scuba Park – Mark Stonebridge is coordinating this outing, and it should be a good, fun dive.
  1. iv.     October 4-11 – Curacao – 16 people are signed up, 10 of which are from the club.
  1. v.     October 25-26 – Underwater Pumpkin Carving at Blue Lagoon – Danny Bouska will be coordinating.
  1. vi.     November 8 – Chili Cookoff – Kevin Campbell may coordinate outing; will give it some thought.
    1. Becky Marak, Senior Board Member:  Becky announced that she sold $110 in merchandise last month, and that she will be placing one more custom order after the October member meeting.

  1. i.     Mark indicated he had collected $45.50 last month for our 50/50 Raffle, along with $2 in Rebel non-wear fines.

  1. Welcome – Danny Barentine opened the meeting at 7:25 PM with a welcome to guests and members.  Approximately 35 people were in attendance.
  1. Recognition of Guests – Danny Barentine recognized four guests:  Kristin and Chad, Kevin, and Mike.  Frank had just joined as a new member.

  1. i.     Financial Status – Kevin made a deposit of $905.98, which includes $58.50 in 50/50 sales, $2 in non-wear fines, $587 in merchandise sales, $150 in deposits for the September rig dive trip, $60 in deposits for the July tubing trip, $41.48 in outing share and $7 in miscellaneous.  The new balance is $3,828.94, which also reflects a $1 check adjustment, and $70 in lost checks that have not been deposited in the last 180 days.

  1. i.     Kelly Barentine reported that 5 people attended the June Restaurant of the Month at Primo’s in Ft. Worth.  15 people had RSVP’d that they would attend.  The restaurant was reasonably priced.
  1. ii.     Becky Marak reported that only 3 people attended the June social outing at Martin’s Brewery.  Folks had fun in spite of the heat, paying $10 for 3 pints of beer to taste.
  1. iii.     Kelly Barentine indicated that the July Restaurant of the Month will be at BFF Asian Grill in Mansfield on Friday, July 11 at 7:00 p.m.  BFF Asian Grill offers a full bar.
  1. Reggie Clark did a presentation on Living in Utila Honduras as a Scuba Instructor
  1. Mark Stonebridge did a last call for 50/50 raffle tickets.

  1. i.     June 21 – Mid-Year Outing – Scott Playle indicated that 25 people attended.  Soulman’s Barbeque catered the event, and those that attended walked away with lots of raffle prizes.
  1. ii.     July 19-20 – Guadalupe River Tubing – Scott Playle indicated that Butch and Kay Mikes are coordinating this outing, and there are sign-up sheets in the back for those that want to attend.  $20 will reserve your spot in the cabins at Jellystone.
  1. iii.     August 30-Sept 1 (Labor Day) – Mammoth Lake and Gulf Oil Rig Dive – Scott Playle indicated that he needs a non-refundable deposit of $150/person if anyone is interested in diving on the boat.  There are two spots left.
  1. iv.     October 4-11 – Curacao – Flyers are in the back with more information.
    1. Becky Marak, Senior Board Member:  Becky announced that she sold $587 in merchandise last month, of which $512 was from the Fashion Frenzy
